Warren Beatty plays Joe Pendleton, a Los Angeles Rams quarterback who finds himself in a heavenly conundrum when his guardian angel escorts him to the other side - before his time. It's exactly as funny and exactly as insane as Winona Ryder floating in the air and lip-syncing "Jump in the Line (Shake, Senora)" with a phantom football team, and it makes being dead look fun. Leave it to Tim Burton to dream up an afterlife that looks less like heaven and more like the DMV (so in other words, hell). But he proves a persistent spirit and seeks out his assailant with the help of sham psychic Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg) who can, inexplicably, hear him. The social commentary is a little dulled by the warm and fuzzies, but that’s hardly a complaint. His re-imagining of 1943’s WWII romance “A Guy Named Joe” sees Richard Dreyfuss playing a recently departed aerial firefighter tasked with aiding his bereaved girlfriend (Holly Hunter) in moving on romantically. It’s not one of Steven Spielberg’s best, but then the man sets a pretty high bar. That means heaven is also of one’s making, and what Williams makes of his, with a boundless imagination and painterly visuals, just about patches over the narrative missteps.
